KHS coach focuses on conditioning, Chambers credited with good opener

The Knoxville Panthers competed at the Little Hawkeye Conference Indoor Track Meet in Grinnell last Friday evening.

It was an early season test for the coaches to look at their lineups and decide what stepts to take next in gearing up for the outdoor season.

Knoxville varsity girls’ coach Jeremy Van Engen said his squad needs to work on conditioning.

Van Engen stated, “Carrie Chambers was the highlight for the Panthers. She ran really well for us. She clocked a 1:06 400 meter leg in the distance medley and ran on the 4x200 team.”

The Panther coach said he has a lot of good hurdlers to work with and some young athletes in the sprints.

Knoxville will have some time off before getting back into action on the track competitively.

Up next for the team are the Clarke of Osceola Relays slated for Thursday, April 3. Two days later will be the Knoxville Panther Relays to be held at the Randy Wilson Track.

Knoxville’s top two relay teams each finished in fifth place at the LHC Indoor. The distance medley team of Jenci Ruff, Laney Cushman, Carrie Chambers and Erica Fee ran 4:59.17. The KHS 4x200 squad of Ruff, Lucy Olson, Cushman and Chambers clocked a 2:01.22.

The Panthers 4x800 relay team was sixth as was the shuttle hurdle squad.

Top KHS performances in open events had Ashley Hawkshead eighth in the shot put at 26’11”.

Haili Swan was ninth in the 400 at 1:13.96. The freshman was also 11th in the 60 meter hurdles at 11.38 seconds.

Sidney Washington was eighth in the 800 at 2:52.60.

Kaeline Schuenke was 10th for Knoxville in the 1,500 with a time of 5:56.98.
