Knoxville —

Waldorf College’s Jessica Fresh (Knoxville graduate) is creating a new standard for women’s wrestling at the college. Since transferring from the University of Northern Iowa at the beginning of the spring 2012 semester, Fresh has become an integral member of the team.

On March 31 and April 1,  Fresh displayed her talents at the Olympic Trials Qualifier in Cedar Falls.

She wrestled in a field of 10 other wrestlers at 48 kilograms.  The top-two place-winners in each weight class would advance to the Olympic Team Trials to be held in Iowa City.

Fresh had a solid start winning 1-0, 7-0 over Esthefania Jimenez (OCU/Gator).  In her second round match she dominated Dyonne Sedillos (OCU/Gator) winning by technical fall 6-0, 7-0.  Fresh won by pin in the second period of her semi-final match against Courtney Martell (Warrior Wrestling Club) to propel her into the finals.

She took on Candace Workman (USOEC) in the hard-fought final.  After losing only 1-0 in the first period, Workman gained a 6-0 advantage in the second to hand Fresh her first loss in the tournament.  Fresh returned to the mat for her true second place match against Brianna Rahall (OCU/Gator).  Fresh gained the victory pinning Rahall in 1:30.

“I was excited to make trials, but I was disappointed to fall short in the finals,” stated Fresh.  “I am pumped for the opportunity to compete for a spot on the Olympic team.”

Head Women’s Wrestling Coach, Dustin Baynes added, “Jess wrestled tough last weekend and I am excited she gets this opportunity. Her performance shows how much our program is developing and that our girls can compete with the best.”

Fresh placed outright second to advance to the Olympic Team Trials April 20-22, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Fresh’s weight class will compete April 22.  The winner of each weight class will earn a spot on the United States Olympic Team and will compete in London this summer.

Jessica is the daughter of Ron and Jill Fresh of Knoxville.
