Twin Cedars defeats defending champs

Des Moines — The Twin Cedars Sabers came out victorious over a defending Class 1A State Baseball Champion, Martensdale-St. Marys at Principal Park Friday night. 

The victory came after the Sabers and Blue Devils went into extra innings. With a tie score of 1-1 at the end of the seven regulation innings, defenses continued to be strong in the eighth. 

In the top of the ninth, the Sabers were able to score three to take the lead, and eventually, the game, by a score of 4-1. Twin Cedars sophomore Otis Roby went the distance, pitching all nine innings, giving up five hits and striking out seven batters. 

The Sabers move on to play Newman Catholic of Mason City. The first pitch is scheduled for noon on Thursday, Aug. 1.
