Des Moines — The Twin Cedars Sabers lost to Newman Catholic of Mason City this afternoon by a score of 3-0.
The loss ends a season for the Sabers, in which they won the most games in Class 1A in the state. Their final 2013 record will stand at 36-3, including the postseason.
"I gave it all I've got," starting pitcher Otis Roby said after the game. "I think my teammates did, too."
"We played our best," Brent Parker added. "No regrets."
Both were glad to see the support the community showed. The stands along the third baseline were filled with Saber fans.
Coach Matt Miller said the effort from his team was there today, but the execution was not. Baserunners were scarce for the Sabers today, and a few mistakes on defense aided Newman's ability to get on the board.
"Against a team like Mason City-Newman, you're not going to come out on top when you make mistakes like we did," Miller said.
Overall, Miller is proud of his team and the season they put together. The team learned several things they intend to take into the offseason, and this year's finish will be used as a benchmark for next.
