Bussey — The Twin Cedars Sabers defeated the Lamoni Demons Wednesday night to earn their way in to the second round of the eight-man football playoffs by a score of 40-22.
On a sloppy, rainy night, in which lightning was threatening a delay, the wet ball appeared to be costly to the Sabers early on. The first two scores were safetys for Lamoni, as the Sabers were forced to send the ball out of the back of the end zone after fumbles.
The Sabers did not take long to get on the board, however, to go up 6-4. The Sabers never trailed at any point in the game.
Tough defense, Demon turnovers and good offensive execution kept the Sabers in control throughout the game in front of the hometown crowd.
"We haven't been in this position for a long time," Coach Aaron Allspach said. "It took complete team effort, all four quarters, to get it done. I'm super proud of them." (Video of Allspach's comments accompany this article.)
Twin Cedars will play at Adair-Casey Monday night. Adair-Casey comes in with a record of 10-0 after defeating Meskwaki Settlement School. Twin Cedars' record stands at 10-1.
