Knoxville —

The Knoxville 9-10 year-old all-star girls’ softball team went 4-1 in district play to earn a trip to the state meet.

Knoxville beat Grinnell 18-8, Mahaska American 8-5 and Mahaska National 16-15.

Mahaska Midwest beat the Knoxville girls 11-5 before Knoxville bounced back to top New Sharon 9-8 to earn the trip to the state meet.

The State Tournament was held in Oskaloosa July 11 through July 15.

“The girls have worked very hard to get to state and we going to continue to work hard for our wins,” stated Knoxville Coach Rhonda Douglas.

“The girls have come out every game and hit the ball and played some very good defense. I have enjoyed working with this group of girls in teaching them how to play softball and to enjoy the game,” Dougals replied.

At the state meet Knoxville finished with a record of two wins and three losses.

The team beat Central Iowa 7-6 (8 innings), and they knocked off Monroe County 8-2.

The losses were to Grandview 9-5, Burlington 10-9 and to Boone 5-3.

“The girls came out and played hard. It was a great season. A great experience and I hope they keep going with it,” stated coach Douglas.
