Knoxville — The Knoxville boys' basketball team struggled against the Grinnell Tigers Friday night and lost 58-30.

The Panthers could not gain much momentum against the Tigers, who finished fourth in the state last season. Things started out well, as both teams were tied 5-5 at the end of the first quarter.

The Tigers began to pull away in the second quarter and led 25-14 at halftime. Grinnell was led in scoring by Joe Schmidt, who had 16 total points. His total was equal to that of the Panthers' top two scorers on the night, Ross Shelford and Joe Stearns, who scored 9 and 7 points, respectively.

"They wanted it more than we did," Knoxville Coach Jeff Larson commented. He went on to say Grinnell is a good basketball team, and its coach, Scott Sharp, does a great job.

Up next for the 0-4 Panthers is a showdown with Centerville at home Monday night.
