An Ames man has been charged with stealing a truck from a rural Knoxville residence on April 10.

Ricky Dean Hartman, 55, of Ames, was charged with second-degree theft, a class D felony. He was arrested on a warrant on Thursday.

Hartman responded to the charges prior to his arrest, however. On Oct. 28, 2019, the court received a letter from him. He stated he was awaiting Nov. 14 sentencing in the Story County Jail on other charges.

He was appointed an attorney and on Thursday pled not guilty to the charge.

After the Marion County Sheriff's Office took the report of a stolen Ford F150 truck on April 10, the vehicle was reported to have been recovered on June 12. Law enforcement agencies had also reported seeing Hartman driving a similar vehicle in May and June.

The truck was located wrecked on June 5. Police investigators said Hartman said he had no knowledge of the truck. Law enforcement said they had photos of Hartman with the vehicle.
