As 2020 begins, the Knoxville Recreation Center and Parks and Recreation Department would like to celebrate the exciting happenings from 2019 and take a look into plans for 2020.
In the Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department, we have been diligently working on completing several projects around the city.
We updated the signage at all of our city parks and recreation facilities. Young’s Park, just off of Highway 14 by the VA, had another stage completed with the addition of a new Skate Park, Rope Climber, restroom and shelter structure.
A new Parks Shop for maintenance and storage was also built.
The new tennis courts feature four lighted courts and outdoor basketball courts on the west side of the Recreation Center. The courts have received lots of good use throughout this past year.
The dog park is becoming increasingly popular and the end of 2019 saw the beginning of the upgrade project to be completed in the spring of 2020. The existing light poles were removed in the fall.
During the spring of 2020, the existing fencing and dugouts will be removed and a new fence will be installed to cover a 360-foot by 160-foot area. There will be a fence separating the large dog area that will be 100 feet wide and the small dog area that will be 60 feet wide.
Each area will have its own entry area and a shade structure will be put up to equally cover a section of each side of the dog park.
To obtain a permit to use the dog park, visit the Knoxville Veterinary Clinic or Animal Health Center of Knoxville.
Competine Trail will begin its expansion in the spring of 2020. The new addition to the trail will take it from the hospital to Highway 14, then from Gordon St./ Streeter St. to Roche St, then from Roche St. to 5th St.
This expansion will give the trail a total of around two miles of paved trail. This is the first extension of the trail since 2005.
The Knoxville Recreation Center added a new playground with a section for 2-5 year old children and a section for 5-12 year old children.
