McCorkle Hardware, located in Columbia, celebrated 100 years of business on July 25.
The hardware store, which opened in 1919, hosted an open house with food catered by D&S. They also gave away commemorative T-shirt to celebrate their 100 years of business.
Maurine McCorkle, the current owner of McCorkle hardware, is very proud her family’s business has achieved such an accomplishment.
“It’s very exciting that my family has been in business for 100 years,” she said.
Maurine’s grandfather, Norval Leslie McCorkle, started the hardware store in 1919. When he passed away in 1963, the store was then handed down to his son, Bob. Bob recruited his brother Jim, who went by the name “Corky,” to help partner in running the store.
Maurine says that after her father, Bob, started running the store, the plan was that she would always take it over after his passing. She has now been running the store for over six years, helping to continue on the legacy of McCorkle Hardware.
Today, there are now four generations of McCorkles who have played a role in running the well-known hardware store. With a customer base not just in Marion County, but also around the country, McCorkle Hardware has built up their clientele throughout the years. They now serve farmers across the state of Iowa, as well as customers from Chicago, Missouri, Nebraska and Ohio.
Throughout their 100 years of service, McCrokle Hardware has become known for carrying everything you could need in their store. They live by their motto: if we don’t have it, we’ll get it.
“That’s what we’re famous for,” says McCorkle.
Maurine does not know if her family’s hardware store has another 100 years in it, but she has no plans on going anywhere anytime soon.
“I don’t know how much longer we’ll go,” she says, “but we’ll stay as long as we can.”
One thing is for certain, though. McCorkle Hardware has become a trusted name in Marion County and its customers are ready to help support the family-run business, hopefully for 100 more years.
