Walkers carry the weight for local veterans

Supporters of veterans and vets get ready to set off for the “Ruck for Vets” 10K walk.

KNOXVILLE — About 75 veterans and residents strapped on weighted backpacks and walked 10K (6.2 miles) to raise money for local veterans.

This is the first year Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3519 has sponsored the “Ruck for Vets” event, which was Saturday, Aug. 26.

Jake Beaver, post commander for the VFW 3519 in Knoxville, said the walk meets a timely need.

“The relief fund is what we use to help veterans in need,” Beaver said. “We depleted our relief fund and we needed another fund-raiser to continue to help veterans.”

VFW Chaplain Mike Braman brought up the idea for a 10K run during a meeting among veterans. Braman was told to run with it. He spent four months organizing the event.

Beaver said “Rucks for Vets” has received a lot of support and has grown quickly. A free-will lunch and live entertainment followed the walk.
