MAHASKA COUNTY — Two people died in an accident on Hwy. 92 on Monday, July 1.
At around 10:15 a.m. on July 1, officials from the Mahaska County Sheriff's Office were called to a two-vehicle accident on Hwy. 92, near the intersection of Urbana Avenue.
According to the release, a 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup had been traveling eastbound on Hwy. 92, crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2019 Mack semi tractor-trailer.
The driver of the S10 pickup, 32-year-old Chase Matthew VonLienen of North Liberty and a passenger, 40-year-old Bobbie Jean Melford of Wellman, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi tractor-trailer, 55-year-old Scott Anthony Wagg of Washington, Iowa, was uninjured during the accident.
According to the release, VonLienen and Milford were transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny, where autopsies will be performed on them.
The S10 pickup was a total loss, according to the release, and the damage to the semi tractor-trailer was estimated at $40,000.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
The Mahaska County Sheriff's Office was assisted by members of Mahaska County Emergency Management Agency, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Department of Transportation, the Oskaloosa Fire Department, the Barnes City Fire Department, the Oskaloosa Police Department, Mahaska County Secondary Roads Department, Mahaska Health Partnership Ambulance Service and the Mahaska County Dispatch Center.
