Dear Editor,

Selling fireworks became legal in Iowa in 2017. That same year, the Knoxville City Council banned setting off fireworks within city limits at any time. Sadly, however, enforcement of this ordinance has been "casual" at best. According to the Knoxville Police Department's own figures, zero citations have been issued, in spite of numerous complaint calls in both 2017 and 2018.

The elderly, veterans suffering from PTSD, pet-owners, parents of young infants, and residents who simply value their peace and quiet are left wondering if 2019 will be the year this track record finally changes. Knoxville police officers, please remember that you represent the entire community. While issuing citations on this most patriotic of holidays may feel uncomfortable, it's part of your job and we depend on you to do it.
