To the Editor:
I am writing as a member of the DMACC Board of Trustees for 10 years. I have seen DMACC grow substantially to meet the needs of many additional students and the requests of businesses. Also, as a taxpayer, I am pleased that DMACC has the lowest property tax levy rate of all 15 community colleges.
All Central Iowans will be going to the polls on Sept. 10 to show their support for Des Moines Area Community College and its students. Two DMACC levies will be on the ballot. They are NOT new taxes. They are a continuation of levies that have helped support DMACC for many years.
One is DMACC's 20 ¼ cent plant fund levy. This fund is used to maintain and operate educational and training facilities. The second, their six-cent equipment levy, funds educational equipment used to support the education and training opportunities for the more than 70,000 credit and non-credit DMACC students each year.
Opportunities through DMACC became more convenient when the Center for Career and Professional Development opened Aug. 23 at Southridge Mall. Noncredit classes for personal and professional development and exciting career paths to high school students at the Warren County Career Academy will be available to all Warren County high schools. Funds made available through this levy will all fund a portion of the programs and allow both our adult and high school students to remain competitive and succeed at an affordable cost.
Please vote on Sept. 10
Kevin Halterman, DMACC Trustee
