Matthew Kauffman

Pleasantville junior Matthew Kauffman competes at the State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines.

DES MOINES — It was a brief one day trip for Pleasantville junior Matthew Kauffman (36-7) at this year’s state wrestling tournament. The heavyweight went up against a couple of tough opponents and was pinned twice to see his early exit from the tourney.

Kauffman started the night Thurday, Feb. 20, against No. 1 Chet Buss (43-0) of North Butler-Clarksville. Buss would get a takedown and two separate three-point near falls in the first period before starting the second on the bottom and reversing Kauffman to get the pin.

Kauffman fell to the consolation bracket needing a win to stay alive. He would have to beat Kody Timm (38-9) of HLV-Victor.

After a scoreless first period, Kauffman would start the second on the bottom and get the escape to go up 1-0 going into the third.

But just like his first match, his opponent would get a reversal from the bottom and pin Kauffman to end his tournament.

Kauffman was making his third appearance at the State Meet.
