The Knoxville Panthers looked strong as they took care of business by blanking the No. 5 ranked team in Class 2A boys’ soccer 3-0 Wednesday, May 22.
The Panthers beat the Grinnell Tigers in a match that was played in Pella after it was determined the Grinnell field wasn’t playable due to saturated grounds.
Knoxville was protecting a very precarious 1-0 lead throughout halftime and a majority of the second half.
Cristian Magana had the first KHS score.
Matt Brown sealed the win with a pair of late goals. Brown’s firs score was a tap in off a Sam Wadle shot that the keeper blocked into the middle of the box.
The second goal by Brown came on a cross from Wadle that he put away on a one-on-one move against the keeper.
Wyatt Darnell had seven saves in goal for the Panthers.
KHS Coach Dylan Mick replied, “Our back line played incredible as they were composed and intelligent against a talented Grinnell team that had climbed to No. 5 in the rankings.”
Mick credited the Panther depth as the key to the win. He stated, “As the game wore on, we stayed fresh and the Tiger defense was wearing down.
