The Knoxville Panther varsity softball team opened at home May 20 to play the Newton Cardinals in a non-conference affair.

Newton scored three runs in the top of the first. Despite the Panthers fighting back throughout the night, the Cardinals won 6-3.

Three Newton singles, coupled with a walk and a KHS error led to the three runs in the top of the first.

A double off the bat of Maddy Findley scored Knoxville’s Emery Neer in the first inning to get one of the runs back.

A run in the top of the third put the Cardinals on top 4-1.

Knoxville closed in with single runs in the fourth and fifth to make it 4-3 in favor of Newton.

Two runs in the top of the sixth made the final 6-3.

Neer led the KHS hitting attack with two hits, scored two runs and swiped two bases.

Findley had two doubles, while Alex Griggs and Jordyn Franck each collected two hits.

Ashlyn Finarty and Emma Dunkin, a pair of eighth graders each had one hit for Knoxville.

Ashlyn Finarty was the starting and losing pitcher. She worked seven innings allowing six hits and six runs, of which only three were earned. Finarty fanned four and walked eight.

Knoxville is coached by Coy Hupfeld.

Odds and Ends

Knoxville travels to Centerville to face the Redettes May 30 with the JV and freshman games cancelled due to soccer. The varsity game will be played at 7:30 p.m.
