Kaya DesPlanque

Kaya DesPlanque puts up a shot for the Twin Cedars Sabers in a home game last year. TC looks to improve on a mark of 6-17 from last year.

Brooke Roby earned second-team all-conference honors a year ago for the Twin Cedars Sabers.

Roby led the Sabers in scoring, 3-point field goals and had over 40 steals and assists for a Saber team that was 6-17 during the 2018-19 campaign.

Four other letter winners will help Saber Coach Trent Verwers with his second TC basketball squad. They include Kaya DesPlanque, Chloe Swank, Jenna Hastings and Jetta Sterner. DesPlanque and Swank were strong on the Saber charts with steals.

“The main strength of our team is our work ethic and quickness. The weakness is the lack of height,” Verwers stated.

The coach listed three young players who are expected to play a role for the varsity this winter, that includes three guards, Rylee Dunkin, Cheyanne Bruns and Kisha Reed.

Verwers lists Lamoni, Moulton Udell, and Seymour as the teams to beat in the league along with Murray.

Verwers added, “We are hoping to not just improve our record, but to be at or above .500. The goal is to build more of a winning culture, just like in softball.”

The home opener for TC is Dec. 2 when they face Pleasantville. The very next night TC plays host to the Wayne Falcons.
