The South posted a 24-13 win over the North in the annual North vs South Iowa Shrine Football Game Saturday in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
The South has now won seven of the last outings in the series.
The South has won 10 of the last 14 games played as they own a 24-22-1 advantage in the overall series.
Several area players saw time in the game.
Pella Christian’s Nathan De Bruin handled the kicking duties for the South. He kicked a 26-yard field goal in the first half as the South led 17-0 at intermission.
De Bruin also added three extra point kicks.
Pella quarterback Ryan Gustafson launched a 51-yard touchdown strike to Zach Eaton, out of Waukee High School in the second half.
Also seeing time on the field was Pella Christian’s Noah Treimer and PCM Mustang Wes Cummings.
The 2019 high school football season is slated to start with a full slate of games Friday, August 30. The Pella High Little Dutch open at home against the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs.
Knoxville led by head coach Eric Kellar opens with Fairfield at home Aug. 30 and the Pella Christian Eagles will make the short trip to Oskaloosa to face the Indians on opening night.
Twin Cedars in 8-Man football will get a jump on most teams in the state with a contest set for Aug. 23 against English Valley at home kicking at 7 p.m.
Melcher-Dallas has an Aug. 30 opener against Seymour-Moulton-Udell at home while the Pleasantville Trojans travel to Lynnville-Sully to face the Hawks Aug. 30.
Over in Monroe the defending Class 2A State Champion PCM Mustangs open play at Newton Aug. 30 under the direction of head coach Greg Bonnett.
