The Pleasantville Trojan varsity wrestling team has kept a hectic pace to start the 2019-2020 season.
The Trojans were 7th at the West Central Activities Conference (WCAC) Tournament held Dec. 21 in Panora.
Prior to that the Trojans were 4th at the Tri-County Invitational in Thornburg Dec. 14 and they were 4th at the Montezuma Invitational Dec. 7.
Those are just the tournaments the team was in prior to the start of the 2020 portion of the schedule.
At the league tournament, the Trojans weren’t at full strength as they finished in 7th place with 79 team points.
Pleasantville had seven wrestlers competing in Panora. The top finish for PHS were by Devon Luing (106) and Kitt Lundy (138) as both Trojans finished second at their respective weights.
Luing had two pins, both under a minute and a loss by fall to Peyton Nixon of Woodward-Granger.
Lundy had a fall in the first round and a 16-7 major decision to reach the finals.
In the title match at 138, Lundy dropped a 13-3 decision to Weston Pote of West Central Valley.
Matthew Kauffman (285) was 2-2 for the day en route to a third place finish. The two wins were with pins.
PHS added a fourth place finish by Michael McGriff (170), and a pair of fifths by Alex Sampson and Isaac Mann.
Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (EBF) won the Tri-County Invite with 211 points. Pleasantville was strong in 4th place overall with 123 points.
The leader for the Trojans was Cale Anthony (220) with a first place finish. Anthony had a bye then two pins, the quickest in 52 seconds over a wrestler from Columbus Community.
Kauffman (285) posted two pins before losing in the title match 4-2 to a wrestler from English Valley.
Luing (106) was second with two pins and a loss in the finals. The falls were against wrestlers from Iowa City, West and North Mahaska.
Settling for third place were Jacob Hiemstra (160) and Jake DeJoode (195). Both wrestlers won two of three matches for the day.
Brock Jones (113), Trevor Nickel (132) and Ross Stephens (145) all finished fourth.
At Montezuma the Trojans were 4th in the team standings with 138 points.
Kauffman won a title for the Trojans at 285. Lundy at 138 and Cale Anthony at 220 each were runner-up.
Odds and Ends
The Trojans will participate in three more varsity tournaments during the month of January.
They are slated to be at the PCM Tourney in Monroe Jan. 11 with a 9 a.m. start.
The Pleasantville Tournament is set for Jan. 18 at 9 a.m. with the Colfax-Mingo Tourney a week later, Jan. 25.
