It was non-conference action for the Pleasantville Trojans Monday night when the Indians from Clarke paid a visit. And it was a case of two different halves. In the first half the Trojans could do very little wrong and the Indians could do very little right as Pleasantville zipped out to a 50-24 lead.
The second half was a reversal of fortunes. The Indians got hot from the perimeter and the Trojans cooled off considerably. The relentless attack of the Indians pulled them to within 10 points of the lead with 3:25 left in the game and things were getting a little tight around the collar. The Trojans were in need of a stopper and they found one in Tagen Douma. Douma connected on a baseline jumper and then made eight consecutive free throws down the stretch to seal the deal on an 81-67 win.
“I think we hit the panic button in the second half,” Trojan coach Joel Allman said. “They got hot and hit some shots. Their pressure bothered us and we should have done a better job against the pressure. It was good to see Tagen come through for us in the end. I was very happy with our first half effort. We were well rounded and we strive to get that balance.”
After the first eight and one-half minutes of play, the Trojans held a 28-0 lead and it appeared the game would be a blowout of major proportions. Pleasantville had four three point buckets in that run with Douma getting a pair and a pair of breakaway layups. Colby Sandholdt and Mason Scheve also had triples in the run.
Clarke began to heat up in the second quarter as they played the Trojans even at 24-24 for the second eight minutes. The Trojans had only two threes in the second stanza. Scheve had one and Mitch Harken had the other.
Caylor Clark opened the second half with a three ball for the Trojans and then the big chill set in. The Trojans would score only nine more points in the period while the Indians ripped off 18 points. The in the first five minutes of the final frame the Indians used an 18-9 run to pull to within 10 at 70-60. It was Douma time.
Douma led the Trojans with 26 points and he had double digit help from Scheve with 20 points and Harkin with 17. Clark just missed a triple double by one point. He had nine points to go with 10 rebounds and 11 assists.
