Melcher-Dallas cross country coach Amy Stuart (middle) is pictured with athletes from the school who qualified for the state meet last year. They are Emery Sage and J’Lyn Knutson.

When it comes to cross country being offered at Melcher-Dallas High School, coach Amy Stuart has two of the best around.

Emery Sage and J’Lyn Knutson both ran at the State Meet in Fort Dodge a year ago. Knutson actually is a two-time state qualifier.

Knutson, a junior, is the lone girl on the 2019 M-D roster, but look for her to be strong again.

The M-D boys’ squad actually will be able to count a team score this season, provided they can stay healthy. A total of five boys have reported to practice.

In addition to Sage, Noah Offenburger, Jacob Russell and Tyler Hartman are all seniors, who lettered a year ago. Sage is also a senior this year for the Saints.

Freshman Owen Suntken has joined the team to give the Saints a team score. “He doesn’t have much experience running, but is willing to work at it,” Stuart said.

Stuart replied, “I hope to see improvement in each of the runners as we work through the season and for the boys to be able to compete as a team for the majority of the season and be able to make a trip to State for the third time in 3 years.”

The season is set to open Sept. 3 with a race in Albia.
