It was an encounter with one of the better teams in the West Central Athletic Conference when the Pleasantville Trojans hosted the Bulldogs from Van Meter Monday night June 10.
The Bulldogs made a statement right out of the gate when they posted six runs in the first two innings. Only three of the runs were earned as four errors and three walks plagued the Trojans.
Once Pleasantville got through the first two innings, they settled in and played Van Meter even-up the rest of the way. With a heavy schedule coming up later in the week, Trojan Coach, Sheldon Card, choose to pitch by committee and five different Trojans went to the hill.
“With two doubleheaders and a couple of single games coming up, I had to keep the pitch count down,” Card said. “We will have to use all of those pitchers later in the week, so tonight we gave them all a look. I was pleased with them as they all did some good things.”
After spotting the Bulldogs six runs, the Trojans started on the comeback trail in the bottom of the third inning. Max Hinners got it started by lashing a double to the right field corner. Hinners moved up on a base hit to left by Wyatt Clark and he scored when a ground ball by Grant Fouch was booted.
Clark was cut down on the basepaths, but Fouch moved to third on a single by Quintin Berglund and a fielder’s choice by Cael Lester. Fouch was able to score on a two-out infield hit by Aaron Wilkins.
In the bottom of the fourth, singles by Triston Mount and Fouch were sandwiched around a walk to Clark to fill the sacks. A ground out to the right side by Quintin Berglund drove Mount home to set the score at 6-3 in favor of the Bulldogs after four innings.
Meanwhile the Bulldogs tacked on three more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to set the final score at 9-3.
“We learned some things tonight,” Card added. “We graduated six starters and that makes every night a learning situation. The conference is new and it is a very competitive league.”
Pleasantville hitting: Wyatt Clark 2-for-2, Grant Fouch 1-for-4, Q. Bergland 1-for-2, Wilkins 2-for-3, Tristen Mount 2-for-4, Hinners 1-for-4
